"This book is 100 pages of awesome. A must for any romance writer's collection!"--Tessa Dare, NYT and USA Today Bestselling author"While other writing books focus on external conflict, Romancing the Beat really brings the whole romantic picture together for romance authors. I'll never write another romance novel without my highlighted copy of Romancing the Beat on my desk."--Celia Kyle, NYT and USA Today Bestselling Author

What makes a romance novel a romance? How do you write a kissing book?Writing a well-structured romance isn’t the same as writing any other genre—something the popular novel and screenwriting guides don’t address. The romance arc is made up of its own story beats, and the external plot and theme need to be braided to the romance arc—not the other way around.Told in conversational (and often irreverent) prose, Romancing the Beat can be read like you are sitting down to coffee with romance editor and author Gwen Hayes while she explains story structure. The way she does with her clients. Some of whom are regular inhabitants of the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists.Romancing the Beat is a recipe, not a rigid system. The beats don’t care if you plot or outline before you write, or if you pants your way through the drafts and do a “beat check” when you’re revising. Pantsers and plotters are both welcome. So sit down, grab a cuppa, and let’s talk about kissing books.

Revealing, but not in the way I'd hoped Gwen Hayes perfectly encapsulates my love-hate relationship with standard romance fare. On the "love" side, we get a story about the incredible transformative power of love, a thing I've experienced every day for fifteen years and know with every fiber of my being is real. I believe in that, I live that, and I want to write about it. But on the "hate" side, she encourages the novelist to repeatedly and explicitly state, in internal or external dialog, what is holding the heroes back from choosing love. This intentional lack of subtlety and nuance is anathema to good writing, but she's not wrong for pointing out that this is how it's done. Somewhere along the lines romance writers decided that telling was superior to showing, and bless her for helping me pinpoint the exact reason I struggle with romance as a genre. Generally speaking, it insults the intelligence, and perhaps even the self-determination, of the reader. But I do write romance myself, hence the "love" part of love-hate, and there are a few useful tools here in terms of basic romance story structure. I enjoyed her metaphor of the caduceus symbol to describe the character arcs - it is the perfect metaphor for the way the protags become increasingly more entwined as the story progresses. And I could see myself using her beat sheet when plotting out my next novel. I can easily see the way my current WIP fits and how it deviates from the standard structure, so at least I'm making more informed choices about where and how I got those required beats. Hayes does understand the romance arc at its most fundamental, for better and for worse. If the book had more content I'd probably be inclined to rate it higher.A new favorite This little book is exactly what I've been wishing for! For several years, I've been a fan of Blake Snyder's _Save the Cat_ and his "beat sheet." However, StC was written for screenwriters, and some of its beats don't easily translate to novels. In this book, Gwen Hayes lays out a four-act structure and a fresh set of story beats that are specific to the romance genre. The book is concise, engaging, and useful for any subgenre. I appreciated that Hayes doesn't tailor her advice to market trends, or make assumptions about gender, sexuality, or heat level. Romance is romance. This book isn't concerned with chiseled abs or stormy eyes*; it's about the bones of writing a compelling relationship.I know I'll be keeping this one on my shelf and recommending it often.*Not that there's anything wrong with chiseled abs or stormy eyes. Big fan of both.
